Inclusion

To ensure every child who comes to St. Paulinus Pre-School develops a high degree of self-confidence and self-worth it is essential that all children are treated with equal concern according to their individual needs.  This is important because when a child and their family are respected, they gain a sense of security that allows the child to develop to their full potential.

This will be achieved by, respecting, and celebrating diversity in our community and setting, and valuing each child’s individuality.  We will provide resources that reflect positive images of culture gender and disability.  We actively work with parents and families to find out about their beliefs, customs, and individual needs.  We do not use practices based on stereotypical assumptions.  We will discuss the needs of each child with their parent/carers to establish the best way to effectively meet the requirements of each child.  Our planning will then consider the needs of each child, and how that child will be valued and supported.  As with all our practices this will be regularly reviewed and, if necessary, advice sought from outside agencies to ensure we are following the best possible practice.

To ensure we meet the individual needs of each child we operate a keyworker system, where each child is paired with a member of staff.  The allocated key worker meets with the parent/carer when the child joins the setting, they discuss the developmental stage of the child, any likes or dislikes of the child, the wishes of the family, and any specific requirement the child has.  The key worker is then responsible for observing the child, tracking their development, and liaising with the parent/carers.  Meetings are arranged twice a year to discuss the child’s development, and their needs.

Our setting holds weekly seniors’ meetings, for the manager, deputies, and senior practitioners, to discuss and evaluate all aspects of the setting including the individual needs of the children, minutes of these meetings are circulated to the staff.

We treat everyone with equal respect and concern regardless of their religion, racial origin, cultural and linguistic background, gender, social group, disability, or dietary needs.  We encourage all our children to take part in all the activities we provide and make the necessary arrangements to ensure every child has equal opportunity to participate.  We will always seek advice from parents/carers and other agencies if necessary and appropriate.

As our premises benefits from wide doors for access, no stairs, and a fully equipped toilet for the use of those with mobility issues, we can provide a full service for those children with disabilities that mean they need to use a wheelchair or crutches.

We celebrate various festivals during the course of the year and ask our parents to inform us of the festivals they celebrate so we can include them in our planning.  By including aspects of the children’s family life, and celebrating them, we can help the children gain a strong sense of self-worth and make them feel valued.

We will actively seek training at every opportunity to ensure we are providing the best opportunities for our children, their families, and staff, as we believe regular training helps our setting to maintain the best possible practice, and it is essential for our staff to have and maintain current and appropriate knowledge.

We will always challenge discriminatory behaviour and/or language, and a caution will be given that such attitudes will not be accepted if displayed.  Should any form of discriminatory behaviour continue, following a caution, from a child, parent, carer, or visitor notice will be given not to return.  If any member of staff behaves in a discriminating way or uses discriminating language, they will be subject to disciplinary action.

We endeavour to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act, Equality Act, and the Statutory Framework, about the care of our children, recruitment of staff, the care of existing staff, volunteers, trainees, and work experience students.

Our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator is Rachel O’Brien.
