Medication
Medicines will only be given to a child if it has been prescribed by a G.P. or a hospital doctor. We do not administer “over the counter” medicines, except nappy rash cream, and piriton, which will be administered with prior written notification from parents/carers. Medicine must be supplied in its original packaging/container, and it must have the original dispensing label clearly showing the child’s name, the dosage prescribed, the expiry date, and how it should be stored. The parent/carer must sign a declaration stating the frequency and amount of each dose. We will keep a record of the time the medication was administered, the date, the amount, and it will be signed by the member of staff giving the medication and by the parent as confirmation they have been informed, and the details are correct.
We will only administer antibiotics after 48 hours from the first dose, written consent from parents/carers must be received prior to each dose.
Should we be asked to store medication for occasional, regular, or emergency use the parent must sign a statement detailing the name of the medication, when it should be administered, how this is done, and at what frequency. The medication should be supplied in the original packaging/container clearly marked with the child’s name, the dosage required, the name of the medication, the expiry date, and how it should be stored. The medication should be administered by a trained first aider, who will then complete a report stating the circumstances in which the medication was given, the date, the time, the dosage, and the effect. This report must then be signed by the parent/carer as confirmation they have been informed, and this must be reviewed every term, or if the dosage changes. The review of medication for occasional, regular, or emergency use will be the responsibility of the keyworker and will take place at the parent/carer meeting. Informing us of any changes to medication in the intervening period is the responsibility of the parent/carer.
No medication will be given without prior consent.
Staff who are taking medication must inform the manager in writing, in addition, it is the staff members responsibility to seek medical advice if the medication may, in any way, affect their ability to carry out their duties. It is the responsibility of the staff member to ensure their medication is kept securely whilst on the premises and out of reach of the children.
